Do you tip your tanning lady? ›

We tip for lots services; dining out, spa treatments, valet service, etc. but since spray tanning is a relatively new service, we often hear the question, “Do I tip you?”. The answer is yes. You would tip your spray tan technician just as you would your hair stylist, nail technician or spa provider.

For a session in a tanning bed, tipping isn't required. When we talked to Matthew Turner, owner of Chicago's Halsted Street Beach Tanning, about tanning etiquette, he said: "[Some people] leave a couple dollars [for] cleaning the bed. It's nice, but it's not something expected or even anywhere remotely required."

Depending on your skin color, in general the average person can develop a base tan in 3-5 sessions which then can be maintained with regular sunbed use. Two sessions a week should be enough to further deepen your tan in a safe and gentle manner.

Moderate tanning of 2-3 sessions a week is OK for everyone else but ensure you rest the skin for a minimum of 24 hours between each session and at least 48 hours for skin type 2. The European Standard advises not to exceed 60 sessions per annum.

Say No to Tight Clothing

Sports bras with thin straps, tight waistbands, and fitted tops can disrupt the tanning process and leave you with uneven color distribution. Opt for a strapless bra and an off-the-shoulder top for a seamless tan. That way, you'll achieve a natural, glowing look.

Expert Advice – During Tanning

Decide Whether to Tan Nude – You will have a private room when tanning, and whether or not you remove all of your clothes is up to you. Many people remove their clothes to avoid tan lines. However, if you do, remember certain areas of your body haven't been in the sun for some time.

What causes that smell? This smell is not actually “burnt skin”, but can be referred to as “after tan odor” or ATO. This smell is caused by helpful bacteria on the surface of the skin. When your skin gets hot from a tanning bed, the smell is emitted.

Level 3 offers medium pressure lamps with lower UV rays and more UVA rays, providing a faster and deeper tan than Level 1 and Level 2. And finally Level 4 tanning beds (and up) feature ridiculously fast tanning times, with sometimes next to zero UVB rays, guaranteeing a dark tan with virtually no chance of a sunburn.

Avoid glasses, sunglasses, shoes, socks, flip flops, and sandals for 8-12 hours. Avoid sleeveless tops that fit tightly to your chest. Avoid perspiring – Whatever level of activity causes you to sweat, avoid it in the hours following your tan, as it can negatively affect the quality of your tan.

The best hours for tanning are in the early morning and later afternoon. These hours provide safer windows and pose less risk for skin damage.

What foods accelerate tanning? ›

Eggs: Eggs, especially the yolk, contain vitamin B6, omega-3 and omega-6, which hydrate the skin and promote tanning. Don't eat too many though, as they are high in cholesterol. Rocket, broccoli and spinach: Lots of green vegetables can also accelerate tanning; eat them raw in salads to get the greatest benefit.

Wearing sunscreen in a tanning bed prevents you from getting the bronze tan you are after. It also fails to protect your skin as it is only effective against natural UV rays. Tanning beds are not recommended because research repeatedly shows they are not safe. They can cause premature aging and skin cancer.

Remember the golden rule: "You should tip 20% on the entire service cost, not per individual," says Schweitzer. So if your haircut and blow-dry cost $40 total, and your color was $60, your total service cost comes to $100. That means you should tip $20 divided between the colorist and stylist.

According to Adriana Martino, an aesthetician and co-owner of SKINNEY Medspa, a premiere Medical Spa in NYC, “tipping is at the discretion of the client and is not compulsory.” Do you tip for Botox or other medical treatments that are cosmetic? It depends. But once again, it's totally up to you.
